Chad's technical expertise spans mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines, including artificial intelligence applications, medical devices, communications, position, navigation, and timing (PNT), additive manufacturing, and unmanned aerial vehicles. His government contracting experience includes matters involving the DoD, NASA, NOAA, and FDA.
A graduate of the United States Air Force Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree, Chad served ten years as an Air Force pilot, flying special-mission reconnaissance aircraft around the world. He earned his law degree from Stanford Law School, where he studied intellectual property law and served as an editor of the Stanford Law Review.
Chad began his legal career with Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP in Cincinnati as a business litigation associate, gaining valuable experience in complex commercial disputes. He then co-founded Clark Business & Health Law, establishing an Ohio office where he developed an intellectual property practice focused on patent drafting, prosecution, and IP strategy for emerging biotech and healthcare companies. His work included patent drafting across diverse technologies, trademark registration, licensing, and counseling on research collaborations and transactional matters.
His success with early biotech clients led to his appointment as Vice President of Intellectual Property at Eccrine Systems, Inc., a medical wearables startup. There, he developed and executed the company's IP strategy and drafted patent applications spanning physiology, electrochemical sensing, electronics, and software. As the company grew to more than 50 employees, Chad became its General Counsel, overseeing corporate contracts, licensing, product launches, HR, and governance.
In 2020, Chad joined Martensen IP, a Colorado Springs-based boutique intellectual property firm, where he continued his patent prosecution practice, became a shareholder, and served as the firm's financial officer.
With Mughal, Gaudry & Franklin, P.C., Chad leverages his broad technical background, business insight, and government experience to deliver strategic counsel to technology innovators. His work reflects a lifelong commitment to excellence, attention to detail, and integrity in service to his clients.
